The families of murdered and missing women before the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry will receive government funding to participate in the inquiry, Attorney General Barry Penner announced.
Inquiry commissioner Wally Oppal recommended May 3, 2011 that government provide funding to 13 applicants who requested financial assistance to participate in the formal hearing commission.
While there is no legal requirement to fund participants in public inquiries, the attorney general has decided to provide funding to the family members of the murdered and missing women. After reviewing the commissioner's recommendations, it was determined that funding the families would be consistent with past practice.
The funding is specifically to assist with legal fees for family members.
All groups with standing may still present before the commissioner in formal hearings. Furthermore, they may take part in the study commission, a less formal process that does not require legal representation.
Pursuant to the terms of reference, the commission's final report is to be provided to the attorney general on or before Dec. 31, 2011.
