Your local farmers' market is coming out of hibernation. Over the next several months, farmers' markets across British Columbia head outdoors to enjoy warmer spring weather and welcome hungry shoppers back to their stalls.
Minister of Agriculture Don McRae celebrated the start of the new season at the Comox Valley Farmers' Market today, with an announcement of a $75,000 grant for the BC Association of Farmers' Markets. The funds will be used to implement the BCAFM's 2011-2016 strategic plan. McRae, BCAFM director Jon Bell and BCAFM manager Elizabeth Quinn spent the morning touring the market and chatting with vendors and shoppers.
Farmers are among some of B.C.'s most knowledgeable food and culinary experts. Visiting a farmers' market is an opportunity for British Columbians to meet the people who grow their food. Shoppers can ask farmers questions, learn new recipes, and give growers direct feedback about the food they enjoy. More than 125 markets in urban and rural communities across the province are connecting people with farmers and food producers.
