As part of a Fire Investigation training course, Wildfire Management Branch will be conducting a series of small controlled burns during the week of Oct. 3 just northeast of Silver Creek.
These low-intensity ground fires will be contained within a pre-established area of mineral soil, which will prevent the fire from spreading. The controlled burns will be completely extinguished before staff leave. The amount of smoke produced is unlikely to cause adverse health effects.
Korean Forest Service staff, arriving in mid-October, will then try to investigate the cause of the burns. The 26 staff will also receive training in observation techniques and fire indicators. This training will help the investigators determine the point of origin of a wildfire, its direction of spread, probable cause and the collection of evidence for possible prosecution.
British Columbia's wildfire management branch is recognized globally as a leader in fire suppression. This is the sixth year that Korean Forest Service will be receiving training in B.C.
