Think your neighbour's vehicle is more likely to be stolen than yours? You may be right - but do you know why?
The provincial bait car program and other initiatives have contributed to a 65 per cent provincewide drop in auto theft since 2003, but individual vehicle owners' decisions have a lot to do with that success. Simply put, stealing a vehicle, or from one, has to be worth the opportunity and the risk.
Here's how you can reduce your risk of being victimized:
- If you are buying a new vehicle, look for one with an immobilizer. According to ICBC, it reduces your chance of theft by at least 80 per cent.
- Get an anti-theft device, such as a steering wheel lock or car alarm, if your car is not equipped with one.
- Look for parking that is secure, well lit and near foot traffic whenever possible.
- Remove all valuables and never leave spare keys in your vehicle, including valet keys that are sometimes hidden in the owner's manual.
- After opening an automatic gate to underground parking, watch for thieves waiting to slip inside and wait for the gate to close behind you.
- Engrave your stereo and other on-board valuables with your driver's licence number.
