Facilities at Capilano University are being upgraded and modernized, thanks to $651,423 in capital funding that is part of government's investment in public post-secondary infrastructure this year.

The upgrades will ensure campus infrastructure and operational systems are performing at optimal levels, which is important to keep our campuses in top operating shape. Work will be carried out at the North Vancouver, Squamish and Sechelt campuses.

B.C. taxpayers are providing $38.3 million for Capilano University's operations this year - including an allowance for general infrastructure maintenance - up from $29.8 million in 2001-02. The number of funded student spaces at the university has increased 3.9 per cent over that time. Almost $25.4 million in capital investments have been made at Capilano since 2001, including a new digital media and film centre that opened this year.

Quotes:

Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of Advanced Education -

"We are working to expand B.C.'s economy, and believe that through continued investment in post-secondary education, we can provide British Columbians with the tools they need to meet the demands of employers and be successful in their personal and working lives. By providing funding for infrastructure renewal, we're ensuring our citizens will continue to have access to training and education opportunities that will help keep B.C.'s workforce competitive in the future."

Jane Thornthwaite, MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour -

"A highly educated workforce is a key component to a strong economy. These upgrades will ensure that our students have a modern and safe learning environment."

Ralph Sultan, MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano -

"As somebody who spent a significant portion of my life in academia, I fully endorse such investments in B.C.'s post-secondary system. Maintaining our infrastructure is critical to our students' educational experiences and helps produce the skilled people we need in our workforce."

Kris Bulcroft, president, Capilano University -

"We are thankful for this funding as it is going to allow us to replace three hot-water heaters and some lighting upgrades that will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Other much-needed maintenance upgrades will also be possible. These upgrades would simply not be possible without the generous support of the ministry."

Funding for B.C. post-secondary institutions:

  • $23.7 billion - amount of money invested in post-secondary education in B.C. since 2001.
  • 57 per cent - the increase in total operating funding since 2001 across the university sector, along with a 26 per cent increase in total operating funding for the college and institute sector since 2001.
  • $1.9 billion - the amount invested in support of post-secondary education this year.
  • $10,090 - amount per full-time student funded by the provincial government, up from $8,440 in 2001-02.
