Students at Langara College will benefit from improved and upgraded campus facilities, thanks to over $2.2 million in capital funding that is part of government's investment in B.C.'s post-secondary infrastructure this year.

The upgrade work will ensure campus infrastructure and operational systems are performing at optimal levels, which is important to keep our campuses in top operating shape. Work at the Vancouver campus includes the upgrade and replacement of the main fire alarm panel. The work will be started this summer with completion planned for early spring 2013.

B.C. taxpayers are providing more than $44 million for Langara College operations this year - including an allowance for general infrastructure maintenance - up from $34 million in 2001-02. The number of funded student spaces at the college has increased more than six per cent since 2003-04.

Almost $45 million in capital investments have been made at the college since 2001, including funding for a new library and classroom building.

Quotes:

Dr. Moira Stilwell, MLA for Vancouver-Langara -

"This investment in infrastructure renewal at Langara will ensure students will continue to have access to a world-class learning facility, which provides them with the tools to take charge of their future."

David Ross, president, Langara College -

"Government's investment in post-secondary infrastructure is welcome. The renewal and maintenance of campus facilities remains a high priority for the college, and we are pleased to receive funding from the provincial government in support of our students and their futures."

Funding for B.C. post-secondary institutions:

  • $23.7 billion - amount of money invested in post-secondary education in B.C. since 2001.
  • 57 per cent - the increase in total operating funding since 2001 across the university sector, along with a 26 per cent increase in total operating funding for the college and institute sector since 2001.
  • $1.9 billion - the amount invested in support of post-secondary education this year.
  • $10,090 - amount per full-time student funded by the provincial government, up from $8,440 in 2001-02.
