The Province has provided the Bulkley-Nechako and Kitimat-Stikine regional districts with over $1.2 million in combined grants in lieu of property taxes, announced Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.
As a result of a 15-year memorandum of understanding between the Province and the two local governments, the Bulkley-Nechako and Kitimat-Stikine regional districts are compensated for hosting the Alcan Kemano hydroelectric project.
This year, the Bulkley-Nechako Regional District received $739,410 and the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District received $492,940 in grants in lieu.

The Alcan Kemano hydroelectric project, which includes dams, reservoirs and a powerhouse, spans both the Bulkley-Nechako and Kitimat-Stikine regional districts.
The 2012 grants in lieu are approximately four per cent higher than in 2011.
Under the terms of the Province's long-standing agreement with Alcan, the Alcan Kemano hydroelectric project is exempt from property tax.
Similarly, communities that host or are impacted by BC Hydro-owned generating facilities throughout the province receive grants in lieu of local government taxation.
