The Province has provided the Bulkley-Nechako and Kitimat-Stikine regional districts with over $1.2 million in combined grants in lieu of property taxes, announced Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

As a result of a 15-year memorandum of understanding between the Province and the two local governments, the Bulkley-Nechako and Kitimat-Stikine regional districts are compensated for hosting the Alcan Kemano hydroelectric project.

This year, the Bulkley-Nechako Regional District received $739,410 and the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District received $492,940 in grants in lieu.

Quotes:

Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development -

"This agreement is about acknowledging the importance of hosting industries that benefit the entire region. With this year's payments, the Bulkley-Nechako and Kitimat-Stikine regional districts combined have now received over $4.6 million since this agreement was signed in 2009."

"The payment has increased each year, providing the districts with an added measure of security and stability and helping them to meet the needs of families and businesses in the area."

John Rustad, Nechako Lakes MLA -

"The Province is committed to ensuring communities have the support they need to provide essential services and foster job opportunities for B.C. families. The Alcan Kemano facility is a major employer in the area and generates a valuable provincial resource, but is exempt from property tax. These grants in lieu of taxation compensate the districts for hosting the facility."

Quick Facts:

The Alcan Kemano hydroelectric project, which includes dams, reservoirs and a powerhouse, spans both the Bulkley-Nechako and Kitimat-Stikine regional districts.

The 2012 grants in lieu are approximately four per cent higher than in 2011.

Under the terms of the Province's long-standing agreement with Alcan, the Alcan Kemano hydroelectric project is exempt from property tax.

Similarly, communities that host or are impacted by BC Hydro-owned generating facilities throughout the province receive grants in lieu of local government taxation.
