To protect sensitive grasslands and riparian ecosystems in the Thompson Rivers District, the Province has introduced measures to restrict recreational use in the Tunkwa-Duffy area.

As of April 13, 2012, the following three sensitive grassland ecosystem areas are closed to off-road vehicles (ORV) year-round: Tunkwa, Six Mile and Cherry Creek.

The closure is authorized under Section 58 of the Forest and Range Practices Act. The closure does not apply to snowmobiles operating on a minimum of 0.5 metres of snow. In addition, the Logan Lake ski trails remain closed to ORV riding.

Camping is prohibited in the three closed areas. The Province encourages the public to use designated camping facilities. The area has more than 20 campsites, both public and private, offering a range of amenities and services.

ORV riding is permitted in the following areas:

• Forge Mountain - approximately 85 km of trails northwest of Logan Lake.

• Face-Paska - approximately 65 km of trails northeast of Logan Lake.

• Logan Lake South - approximately 30 km of trails southwest of Logan Lake.

• Duffy - approximately 130 km of trails southwest of Kamloops (recommended for motorcycle use).

• Staging areas are available at each of these riding areas.

These closures will prevent further damage, such as soil disturbance and introduction of invasive weed species, and restore the grassland ecosystems. Responsible riding and recreation will ensure the Tunkwa-Duffy area remains a popular tourist destination for future generations.
