Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond issued the following statement today in regard to Law Week in British Columbia:

"In British Columbia, our justice system employs more than 15,000 people. We look to these individuals and to justice-related organizations such as the judiciary, police, corrections, prosecutors, defence counsel and court staff, to ensure our rights and freedoms are not compromised.

"The Canadian Bar Association designates one week every April as Law Week, in celebration of the signing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms on April 17, 1982. This provides me, as Justice Minister and Attorney General, with an opportunity to both thank and acknowledge the individuals and organizations that work tirelessly to administer justice in our province. They play fundamental roles in protecting the safety, fairness and well-being of our citizens.

"Throughout the upcoming week, a number of organizations have collaborated to create a series of "Law Day" events in cities across the province, to help educate the public of all ages and showcase the work they do on its behalf. Interactive demonstrations such as the mock trial of the Big Bad Wolf, tours of B.C. sheriffs' vehicles and courthouses, a police K-9 Unit presentation and a mock crime scene, will give the public a glimpse into the justice system's day-to-day operations and processes.

"Law Week is a celebration and reminder of the just and democratic society in which we are fortunate to live. The Charter has framed our identity, protected and promoted human rights, and guaranteed equal benefit and protection of the law.

"I encourage British Columbians to take advantage of the opportunity to learn about and celebrate law and the judicial system. It is through continued education and collaboration that we can ensure British Columbia's justice system is strong, accessible and responsive."
