The BC Coroners Service has announced it will review its investigation and inquest into the 2007 death of Paul Boyd in light of new video evidence that has been brought forward.
Mr. Boyd, who had a lengthy history of mental illness, was shot to death by Vancouver Police on August 13, 2007, at the intersection of Granville and 16th Streets.
A public inquest was held into Mr. Boyd's death in December, 2010, at which time the coroner's jury made a total of nine recommendations, directed to police and health authorities. A copy of the Verdict from the inquest can be found at: http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/coroners/schedule/2010/docs/verdict-boyd-2007-0270-0809.pdf
A bystander's video came to public light only this week, and was therefore not available to the presiding coroner and jury at the inquest.
"Clearly, this video is an important piece of evidence regarding what happened during Mr. Boyd's last moments," says Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe. "In light of this new information, I have directed that a review be undertaken of this file to determine whether any further action is warranted on the part of the Coroners Service."
The Coroners Service hopes to conclude the review and decide on any future course of action within the next few weeks.
