The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the death of a man involved in a mountain-climbing accident in Mount Robson Provincial Park on Aug. 15.

The man has been identified as Richard (Rick) Collier, aged 71, from Calgary, Alberta.

Mr. Collier, a highly experienced mountain-climber, was one of a party of four who were ascending Mount Geikie, a mountain about 3,300 metres (10,820 feet) in altitude located just five kilometres west of the Alberta border.

Preliminary investigation indicates that as the party was climbing with Mr. Collier in the lead, part of the rock face gave way, causing Mr. Collier and others to fall.

Mr. Collier died within minutes of the incident. Two other members of the party were injured.

The other party members were rescued and Mr. Collier's body was recovered by search-and-rescue technicians.

The BC Coroners Service continues to investigate this incident.

Mr. Collier's family has been informed of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service would ask that they be given privacy at this difficult time.

The BC Coroners Service extends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Collier and its appreciation to the Mount Robson Provincial Park rangers and the Jasper National Park public safety wardens for their assistance in this incident.
