The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died in a police-involved incident in Vancouver on Nov. 13, 2012.
The man is Alton Bernard Cuyugan, aged 33, a resident of Vancouver.
On the morning of Nov. 13, 2012, Vancouver Police responded to a request from BC Ambulance to attend a location in the 1300-block of Renfrew Street where a man was threatening to injure himself with a knife. In the ensuing interaction with police, Mr. Ray was hit with a conducted energy weapon (Taser) and is believed to have injured himself with the knife.
Mr. Cuyugan was transported from the scene to Vancouver General Hospital but could not be resuscitated.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) and the Coroners Service continue to investigate this death.
The family of Mr. Cuyugan has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
