Premier Christy Clark has released the following statement in recognition of Eid ul-Fitr:

"This week, 100,000 Muslims throughout British Columbia will join over 1.6 billion followers of Islam around the globe to mark the end of Ramadan with Eid ul-Fitr - the Festivity of Breaking the Fast. Celebrations begin with the sighting of the new moon, signalling the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. For 29 to 30 days, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, teaching values of self-discipline, empathy for the poor, charity, worship, and patience.

"Muslims are not celebrating only the end of fasting, they also are thanking Allah for help and strength throughout Ramadan. Eid is a time when Muslims share their joy and compassion by practising good deeds and giving to charities in their communities. They celebrate by gathering with friends and family, preparing sweets, wearing new clothes, giving gifts, putting up lights and decorations in their homes and preparing a special meal - the first daytime meal they will have had in a month.

"I hope that British Columbians will join in local Eid celebrations with Muslim families in their communities. Eid is an opportunity to acknowledge our province's diverse ethnicities and learn about different cultural heritages.

"No matter what our individual heritage may be, we are united by our love for our families, and we are truly fortunate to live in a province where people can join together in celebrating all faiths.

"Eid Mubarak!"
