Work will begin this summer on a major upgrade to Highway 6 in Coldstream, and resurfacing of Highway 97A near Armstrong. These improvements will increase the safety of these important North Okanagan corridors.

Approximately 2.2 km of Highway 6 will be realigned between Grey Road and Ricardo Road. Existing sharp curves will be straightened to improve sightlines; highway shoulders will be widened to improve safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

As part of the project, the intersections at Grey, Kalamalka and Ricardo roads will be improved, with left and right turn lanes constructed. A new crossing of the Kelowna Pacific Railway will also be constructed.

Environmental benefits include enlarging the existing Coldstream Creek culvert under the highway to improve the fisheries habitat.

This project is valued at approximately $11 million, and will go to tender this spring. Construction will begin this summer with work expected to be complete in summer 2013.

North of Vernon, approximately four km of Highway 97A will be resurfaced, from Crozier to Pleasant Valley Cross Road. This completes the highway resurfacing from Vernon to Armstrong, greatly improving ride and safety. The project is valued at approximately $3 million and will go to tender this spring. Work is expected to finish by the end of August 2012.

Quotes:

Shuswap MLA George Abbott -

"The Highway 97A corridor is an important economic bridge between Vernon and Armstrong. This upgrade will extend its lifespan, and make driving the route safer and more comfortable."
