Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Blair Lekstrom has appointed two local government representatives to fill vacancies on the BC Transit board of directors.

Appointed to the seven-member BC Transit board of directors are:

  • Mayor Carol Hamilton (City of Colwood)
  • Mayor Peter Milobar (City of Kamloops)

The full list of BC Transit Board of Directors is available at: http://bctransit.com/corporate/general_info/governance.cfm

Quotes:

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom -

"The appointment of these mayors is an important feature of BC Transit's board because it ensures a voice for local government. Mayors Hamilton and Milobar are making tremendous contributions within their own communities and now they are going to lend their skills and experience to help manage the transit system across British Columbia."

"BC Transit is currently undergoing a comprehensive review by an independent panel and I am looking forward to hearing the panel's recommendations when they report at the end of August. Communities around B.C. benefit from excellent transit service and we can be proud of the fact that British Columbia contributes more to public transit than any other province in Canada."

Quick Facts:

  • BC Transit is governed by a seven-member board of directors appointed by the government of B.C. according to criteria specified in the British Columbia Transit Act: http://www.bclaws.ca/EPLibraries/bclaws_new/document/ID/freeside/00_96038_01
  • The act requires four of the board members to be locally-elected representatives.
  • The board of directors, through the chair, reports to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
  • The board is governed according to the government of B.C.'s Best Practices Guidelines Governance and Disclosure Guidelines for Governing Boards of B.C. Public Sector Organizations.
