For most students, the first week of school involves new friends, new teachers and a new grade level.
For the students of École Quadra Elementary, it also involves a temporary change in learning environment. While their historic elementary school undergoes seismic upgrades this year, students will attend nearby Richmond Elementary.
This morning, Education Minister Peter Fassbender welcomed students to Richmond Elementary, their home away from home for the next 10 months. Fassbender talked with teachers and greeted students as they arrived.
Richmond Elementary closed in 2004 due to declining enrolment and has been used as a swing school during three other seismic upgrades in the district which shortened construction time, reduced costs and ensured staff and student safety. Transportation costs to bus students to Richmond Elementary have been included in the seismic budget.
École Quadra Elementary officially opened in 1914. The seismic upgrade includes the removal of clay and brick chimneys, reinforcing bars added into masonry walls and the addition of interior and exterior concrete shearwalls.
École Quadra Elementary is an important part of the district's education services. A broad curriculum is provided in both English and French. All grades receive specialized music instruction. The school also features a unique First Nations program for cultural awareness and academic assistance. Last year, enrolment reached 305 K-5 students, with capacity for 515.
After Vancouver, the Victoria area has the highest level of seismic mitigation projects in the province. Most recently, seismic upgrades at Lansdowne Middle school and Central Elementary were completed.
