KELOWNA -- The BC Coroners Service has announced a public inquest will be held into the death of Steven Joseph Scott.
The inquest will take place from Feb. 17 through 21, 2014, at the Penticton courthouse in Penticton.
Mr. Scott, aged 30, of no fixed address, died on Aug. 10, 2012, while in custody in the RCMP cells in Penticton. The Coroners Act makes an inquest mandatory in almost all cases in which a person dies while in police custody.
Presiding coroner Larry Marzinzik and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to
determine the facts surrounding this death. While the jury may not, by law, make any findings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.
An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
Event Date: Feb. 17 to 21, 2014.
Time: 9:00 a.m.
Place: Penticton Courthouse, 100 Main Street, Penticton.
