Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton has issued the following statement:
"It's the eve of the first-year anniversary of the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO).
"On Sept. 10, 2012, the IIO opened its doors and the Province met its promise to implement the recommendations outlined in the Braidwood and Davies commissions.
"Our government created the Independent Investigations Office to ensure that all investigations of death or serious harm involving police officers in B.C. are dealt with promptly, appropriately and independently. This is an important mechanism for ensuring trust in our police agencies.
"It is essential that British Columbians trust the individuals tasked with upholding our laws and protecting our citizens. The police are frontline workers, who are in our communities every day, dealing with some of our most vulnerable citizens.
"In July, the IIO delivered its first annual report. It makes clear that the IIO's executive leadership and its investigators and staff are meeting the challenges that come with establishing a new organization.
"I trust the IIO will continue its important work to strengthen the public's faith in the dedicated officers who keep our citizens safe."
