Whether you are taking a leisurely bike ride, going on a walk downtown or cruising on a longboard, safety needs to be the first priority on the road.
During Crime Prevention Week (Nov. 1-7), the B.C. government wants to make sure pedestrians, cyclists, and longboarders are putting safety first. At times sharing the road with motorists can prove difficult, but abiding by some easy-to-follow tips can make sure that you stay safe while having fun.
To stay safe, follow these tips:
- Slow down and be respectful of everyone on the road - we all have to share it.
- Make eye contact with other road users, as you can never assume that another cyclist, driver or pedestrian sees you.
- Use your head - always wear a helmet while cycling. In addition to a helmet, knee and elbow pads, as well as sliding gloves can reduce injury from an accident on a longboard.
- Maintain your bike or longboard in good working order. Loose trucks on a board or a broken bike chain can be the cause of a serious accident.
- Take extra care when it is raining and the road is wet. Stopping will take longer and visibility is reduced.
- Obey all signs, crosswalks and traffic lights - you cannot be sure others will, so stay alert at all crossings.
- Parents should teach and reinforce proper technique for pedestrian safety. Stress the importance of walking on the inside of the sidewalk, being alert when there is no curb and looking both ways before crossing a street.
