Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton has issued the following statement in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women:
"Today we recognize the tragic reality that an estimated one in three women worldwide faces the threat of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
"Sadly, violence is a daily reality for some women and girls and unfortunately, British Columbia is not immune to this international issue. However, significant work is underway in our province.
"Over the past year, more than 35,000 people were referred to violence against women counselling and outreach programs in B.C.
"That is why earlier this year we distributed more than $326,000 in one-time grants throughout the province to address violence against women and domestic violence, and why we commit $70 million a year to assist vulnerable women and children - because we understand the terrible impact violence has on lives, families, and communities.
"Help is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through VictimLink BC - a toll-free, provincewide, multilingual and confidential help and information line at 1 800 563-0808.
"Let's stand together today and do our part to end violence against women."
