The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died in an avalanche near Golden on Dec. 20, 2013.
The man was Shane Leonard Schroeder, aged 29, of Edmonton, Alberta.
Mr. Schroeder and a friend had that day gone to the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, about 14 kilometres outside of Golden, for a day for snowboarding. In the early afternoon, they went to an out-of-bounds area to snowboard down a steep slope.
While descending the slope, Mr. Schroeder was caught up in an avalanche. When his friend could not locate him, the friend immediately called for help. Mr. Schroder was located by ski patrol and search-and-rescue team members, but could not be resuscitated.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.
The family of Mr. Schroeder has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
