The B.C. government, acting on recommendations from the community, has completed a $3-million investment to improve safety at the Highway 17/Sayward Road intersection in Saanich.
These improvements included installation of "congestion ahead" warning lights, and creation of northbound acceleration and deceleration lanes that are now in use. The northbound bus stop and a new transit queue jump lane will be open to transit riders mid-day on Thursday.
The improvements will help accommodate the high volume of north-south traffic through this busy intersection and reduce the incidence of rear-end collisions. They will also facilitate smoother traffic flow and improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting Highway 17 at Sayward Road.
A working group consisting of representatives from local business, residents, Saanich, Capital Regional District parks and BC Transit, as well as elected officials, was established in 2011. The purpose of this group was to help identify the key safety concerns, provide feedback and make recommendations for improving the safety of the intersection.
This work supports the B.C. government's B.C.'s Families First Agenda by improving road safety. British Columbia has an expansive world-class highway system that connects families throughout every region of the province. Ensuring these highways are as safe as possible is essential.
