The B.C. government is fulfilling a Core Review commitment by introducing legislation to dissolve the Provincial Capital Commission, Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes said today.

Last November, the B.C. government announced the provincial Crown agency would be dissolved in 2014. The measure will save B.C. taxpayers about $1.5 million annually.

The Provincial Capital Commission Dissolution Act will transfer the Provincial Capital Commission's assets, liabilities and staff to the B.C. government. The Commission's cultural services will be maintained.

Quote:

Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes -

"We will ensure that outreach activities connecting British Columbians to their provincial capital and their democratic heritage continue as usual. Our government will support all cultural and educational programs formerly delivered by the Commission, including the BC Youth Parliament and Capital for Kids."

Quick Facts:

  • Government received a mandate to control spending and ensure the best possible use of public resources. The Core Review process is implementing efficiencies to deliver on this mandate.
  • Government can do the Commission's work directly, eliminating duplication of much of the work and saving the taxpayers money.
