Henderson Elementary, self-described as "The little school with the big heart," will be seismically upgraded to protect students and staff in the event of an earthquake.
The Ministry of Education and the Powell River board of education have signed a $3-million agreement to bring the school up to the latest seismic safety standards.
Henderson Elementary, originally built in 1958, has a wood frame. Its foundation walls are unreinforced concrete block. Work will involve replacing some walls, reinforcing others and improving connections throughout the school. As well, the school district will be upgrading the windows.
Currently, the school has capacity for 20 kindergarten and 150 grades 1-7 students. During construction, students will be accommodated in the school and in three portable classrooms. The upgrade is scheduled to begin this summer, with work expected to be completed for the start of the 2015-16 school year.
