Cowichan Valley residents who want to know what’s in their well water have an opportunity this spring to find out for free.
The Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations has launched a study of groundwater quality in the Cowichan River watershed. The study involves sampling private domestic wells to understand the relationship between groundwater geochemistry, drinking water quality and the geology of the watershed. Sampling will be carried out this May and June.
Residents living in the areas of Lake Cowichan, Honeymoon Bay, Mesachie Lake, Youbou, Paldi, Glenora, Somenos, Skutz Falls or anywhere near the Cowichan River between Duncan and Cowichan Lake can volunteer to have their well water tested at no cost. Only a limited number of wells can be sampled in each area, so those interested should apply as soon as possible.
To apply to be part of the study, contact Cali Melnechenko at the ministry regional office in Nanaimo at 250 751-7102 or by email at: Calista.melnechenko@gov.bc.ca
The study is being funded by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) and the Cowichan Watershed Board (through the UBCM gas tax).
