Ministry staff will remove an unsafe tree containing an eagle nest from Crown land in the 48000 block of Yale Road in Chilliwack.
The tree scheduled for removal is old, deteriorating and unstable. Both the tree and nest pose a falling risk to pedestrians and vehicles using Yale Road.
A key part of the project will be modifying an alternate tree nearby with a new nest structure to compensate the loss of the existing eagle nest.
The work will be undertaken sometime between Sept. 1 and 25, depending on weather and staff availability. The timeframe has been chosen specifically to ensure that no eagles are nesting at the location when it is taken down.
Ministry staff have been working closely with the City of Chilliwack’s operations department, which supports the tree’s removal. The local branch of the BC Wildlife Federation has also endorsed the project.
