The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following a police shooting in Surrey on Jan. 17, 2014.

The man was Gaetan Gilbert Plante, aged 61, a Surrey resident.

Mr. Plante was shot during an encounter with Surrey RCMP, which occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Jan. 17, near 98A Ave. in north Surrey.

Mr. Plante was transported from the scene to Royal Columbian Hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arrival at hospital.

The BC Coroners Service and the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) continue to investigate this death.

The family of Mr. Plante has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
