The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died in a fire in a garage in Lantzville, on Feb. 25, 2014.

He was David William Birnie, aged 55, from Lantzville, a small community immediately north of Nanaimo.

At about 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 25, 2014, the Lantzville fire department responded to a structure fire at a garage on Myron Street in Lantzville. When the fire had been extinguished, the body of Mr. Birnie was located in a vehicle in the garage.

The BC Coroners Service and Nanaimo RCMP are continuing to investigate this death. Foul play has been ruled out at this time.

The family of Mr. Birnie is aware of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
