The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following a fall on Sky Pilot Mountain near Squamish on July 5, 2014.
He is Owen Phillip James Hosford, aged 26, of Vancouver.
On the morning of July 5, 2014, Mr. Hosford and two friends took the Sea to Sky Gondola, and from there hiked to Sky Pilot Mountain with the aim of scrambling to the summit of the 6,645-foot peak. This was accomplished, but the weather had taken a turn for the worse. As a result, on the descent, the going became extremely slippery, and Mr. Hosford ended up slipping while going down a snow chute and then falling a considerable distance. He was deceased at the scene.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.
Mr. Hosford’s family has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
The BC Coroners Service would like to extend special thanks to Squamish Search and Rescue and the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team Aerial Extrication Team for their invaluable assistance in this case.
