Young people considering what skills they will need for tomorrow’s in-demand occupations will have an interactive, hands-on experience at WorkBC’s Find Your Fit tour stop at the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre in Squamish on Dec. 16 & 17.

Find Your Fit features a variety of interactive career exploration activity stations - including welding, carpentry, accounting and more - offering youth a chance to try their hand at different skills. These youth, who are just beginning to think about potential careers, will be connected with WorkBC’s labour market information, tools and services. Parents, teachers and career counsellors may also benefit from the event as they look for ways to educate and support youth in their career exploration.

The province-wide tour will continue as a key component of the Regional LNG Energy Seminars and school events on the following dates and locations:

  • Jan. 13-14, 2015: Nanaimo Regional LNG Energy Seminar
  • Feb. 3-4, 2015: Kamloops Regional LNG Energy Seminar

Members of the public are also invited to register for the LNG-Buy BC Contractor-Supplier Bootcamp that will be hosted at the LNG Seminar on Dec. 17 from 3 - 6 p.m.

Dates and locations of the rest of the province-wide tour will be announced later this year.

Find Your Fit is part of B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint commitment to re-engineer education and deliver the skilled workforce B.C.’s growing economy needs. Over 4,500 students took part in the tour at recent regional energy seminars in Prince George, Fort St. John, Terrace, & Prince Rupert and at Find Your Fit school events in Burns Lake, Delta, and North Vancouver.

Quotes:

Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour -

“Through the B.C. Skills for Jobs Blueprint we are committed to preparing the skilled workforce that our growing economy needs. The Find Your Fit tour will ensure that our youth have the tools and resources necessary to consider the full range of in-demand occupations available to them.”

Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education -

“We’re working with school districts to make sure students have the opportunity to start career experiences earlier so they are better prepared for the Skills and Trades jobs of the future.”

Jordan Sturdy, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky -

“I hope many young people from the Sea to Sky take advantage of the opportunity to visit the Work BC Find Your Fit stop in Squamish. It’s a great chance to jump in and get a hands-on feel for some potential career paths that may be part of your future.”

Quick Facts:

  • By 2022, B.C. is expecting one million job openings in B.C. created by retirements and our growing economy.
  • More than 78% of jobs will require some form of post-secondary education, and 43% will need skilled trades and technical workers.
