Teresa Wat, Minister of International Trade and Minister Responsible for the Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism, has issued this statement today:
“On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Province of British Columbia, I am happy to announce that our government has proclaimed June 28 through July 6, 2014, as Latin American Week.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to acknowledge and celebrate the many contributions Latin Americans have made to British Columbia and Canada. Earlier this week I attended the Inspirational Latin Awards 2014 in Vancouver, where I had the pleasure of congratulating all of the nominees who were there that night. These worthy individuals have not only made huge contributions to the B.C. Latino community, but also to Canadian society as a whole.
“The Latin Inspirational Awards were hosted by Latincouver, an organization dedicated to serving the needs of newcomers, long-term residents, and Latin American enthusiasts alike. Events for Latin American Week started with the Canada Day Parade, then onto the Taste of Latin America, Fiesta Latina, and wrapping up this Saturday and Sunday in downtown Vancouver with Carnaval del Sol. I encourage everyone to attend Carnaval del Sol. Please visit http://carnavaldelsol.com/ and check out the many activities happening this weekend.
“I am proud to say that the roots of multiculturalism run deep in our society. Cultural diversity is vitally important to creating a strong and vibrant social and economic future for British Columbia. Reaching out to our neighbours through celebrations such as this is an important way to strengthen our cultural ties.
“We welcome nearly 40,000 new immigrants every year, including many from Latin America. In British Columbia, approximately 30,000 people are of Latin, Central and South American origins. Our cultural diversity is an asset that helps our economy grow and makes life better for families. It is a competitive advantage and is an important bridge that connects us with our neighbours around the world.
“By leveraging our cultural and business connections in Latin American communities, we strengthen trade relationships, attract new investment, and secure jobs for British Columbians.”
