In May 2014, a formal apology was delivered on behalf of all members of the B.C. legislative assembly to Chinese Canadians for historical wrongs committed by past provincial governments.
A consultation report was released at the same time that outlined recommended legacy initiatives.
The next step in the process is to establish a Legacy Initiatives Advisory Council (LIAC). The council’s role will be to work with Chinese Canadian communities and other key stakeholders to advise government on how to ensure successful implementation of the legacy projects and facilitate meaningful community engagement.
A list of recommended legacy initiatives is outlined in the Final Report on the Chinese Historical Wrongs Consultation. The ministry is currently working on draft plans for each of the legacy initiatives.
Final details regarding the individuals sitting on the LIAC council and the terms of reference will be posted on the EmbraceBC website, along with the draft work plans for each legacy initiative by the end of September 2014.
