As part of the implementation of the recommendations outlined in the Final Report on the Chinese Historical Wrongs Consultation, the B.C. Government has posted draft project plans for legacy initiatives on the EmbraceBC web site.
Work is also being done to finalize the members of a Legacy Initiatives Advisory Council (LIAC). The council’s role will be to work with Chinese Canadian communities and other key partners to advise government on how to ensure successful implementation of the legacy projects and facilitate meaningful community engagement. LIAC members’ names, along with that of the chair, will be announced in the fall.
LIAC will review draft project plans for the legacy initiatives and provide feedback to government. A project manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of each project.
In May 2014, a formal apology was delivered on behalf of all members of the B.C. legislative assembly to Chinese Canadians for historical wrongs committed by past provincial governments. A consultation report was released at the same time that outlined recommended legacy initiatives.
