M'akola Housing Society, a non-profit housing operator that manages more than 1,300 social housing units throughout B.C., has been selected to provide property management and administration services for a number of social housing developments in Prince Rupert.

The selection follows an Expression of Interest issued by the B.C. government in July 2013 seeking a non-profit housing provider, including members of the Aboriginal housing sector, to provide property management and administration services at BC Housing-owned properties in Prince Rupert including:

  • Mariposa Gardens - 84 units at 1204-1251 Hayes Cove, Camarillo Lane and Seville Rd.
  • Pineridge Terrace - 37 units at 1306-1378 Summit Ave.
  • Harbour View Gardens - 100 units at 559-701 McKay, 1414-1500 Kootenay Ave.
  • The Kootenay Place - 10 units at 2001-2004, 1001-1006 and 1426-1428 Kootenay Ave.
  • Sunset Villa Apartments - 36 units at 1031 3rd Ave.

M'akola Housing Society was selected based on their nearly 30-year experience providing safe, affordable housing to Aboriginals throughout the province. The agreement will be administered through the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA), under the Aboriginal self-management model for social housing.

Last year, the B.C. government invested more than $1.1 million to provide subsidized housing and rent supplements for more than 440 households in Prince Rupert.
