The B.C. government is inviting input from the public on a regulatory framework for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Carbon capture and storage is a permanent storage solution for harnessing carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial sources. It involves the placement of CO2 deep underground in rock formations where it can be safely and permanently stored. This should then result in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions because the CO2 is not released into the atmosphere.
The CCS discussion paper can be found at: www.gov.bc.ca/carboncapture Comments will be accepted until May 2, 2014.
All submissions will be evaluated as part of the provincial government's work to ensure potential future CCS development in B.C. has strong safety measures and regulations in place.
Completing CCS regulations is part of the Government of British Columbia's 10-year Natural Gas Strategy: http://www.gov.bc.ca/ener/popt/down/natural_gas_strategy.pdf
