Premier Christy Clark issued the following statement on the anniversary of Canada’s entry into the Second World War:
“Seventy-five years ago, on September 10th, Canada joined its Commonwealth allies and entered the Second World War.
“More than a million Canadians answered their country’s call to armed service, including some 90,000 British Columbians - more soldiers per capita than any other province. Millions more did their part on the home front.
“This second global conflict was a fight not for power, but for humanity. Canada’s foes had perpetrated unthinkable atrocities, contrary to all the values we hold dear.
“As we remember the courage and tenacity of our fighting forces, we must also remember the injustices suffered by thousands British Columbians who were interned and dispossessed - simply because of their Japanese heritage.
“When the war was over, this greatest generation did not sit back - they built families, businesses, and a strong foundation for generations to come.
”May we always remember the strength and sacrifice of those who fell, and of those who lived.”
