H5M, a joint venture between Hatch Mott MacDonald and MMM Group, has won the Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Award for Excellence in Design and Contract Preparation - Roads, for its exceptional work on the Port Mann/Highway 1 Cape Horn Interchange project.
The Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project was the largest and one of the most complex projects in B.C.'s history. The design build for the Cape Horn Interchange included constructing 13 separate structures (overpasses and underpasses), while maintaining traffic on all roadways and ramps during construction.
It was a massive undertaking to deliver the project within five years while maintaining traffic flow for tens of thousands of vehicles travelling on Highway 1 and three major roads that connect to the Cape Horn interchange. The design required an innovative approach and H5M used state of the art Civil 3D roadway design software for the project.
Along with planning for traffic flow during construction, the company had to build into the design the logistics for managing within all the constraints of business interests, property acquisition, major utilities, CP Rail relocation, soft soils and environmental mitigation.
The Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Awards recognize technical excellence in consulting engineer services that improve transportation infrastructure in B.C. The 10th annual awards were held Jan. 28 in Vancouver.
Finalists were chosen for projects completed in 2013 in the following categories:
- Design and Contract Preparation - Roads
- Design and Contract Preparation - Structures
- Construction Management and Supervision Services
- Specialized Engineering Services
- Transit Engineering Services
The other finalists in this category were Urban Systems of Kamloops for the 8th Street to Rolla Road project on Highway 2 in Dawson Creek, and RF Binnie and Associates of Burnaby, for the Highway 99 at 16th Avenue Interchange.
