Buckland and Taylor Ltd. has won the Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Award for Excellence in Design and Contract Preparation - Structures, for its exceptional work on the South Fraser Perimeter Road BNSF Viaduct construction.
The project included building a new 450-metre long concrete structure on SFPR over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway, requiring an innovative design to address the variance in seismic response along the length of the structure.
The company worked with the ministry, the Fraser Transportation Group, First Nations, local business owners, BNSF Rail, and the community to deliver an on-time, fast-tracked design build for the project. Archaeological considerations on the site had to be taken into account for the design of the viaduct; dictating the layout of the foundation. Consultation with First Nations was instrumental in the successful and efficient design and construction of this structure.
The Deputy Minister's Consulting Engineers Awards recognize technical excellence in consulting engineer services that improve transportation infrastructure in B.C. The 10th annual awards were held Jan. 28 in Vancouver.
Finalists were chosen for projects completed in 2013 in the following categories:
- Design and Contract Preparation - Roads
- Design and Contract Preparation - Structures
- Construction Management and Supervision Services
- Specialized Engineering Services
- Transit Engineering Services
The other finalists in this category were Sargent and Associates Engineering Ltd. of Victoria, for the Texaco Bridge replacement and Associated Engineering of Burnaby, for the Cypress Creek Bridge rehabilitation and seismic retrofit.
