Starting this month, motorists are advised to expect delays as crews begin rock drilling and blasting to widen the Malahat (Highway 1) between Shawnigan Lake Road north to the Malahat summit.

This work is part of the $15-million project to improve the safety of this corridor for families, motorists, commercial traffic and visitors.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the contractor are committed to minimizing delays during peak periods this summer.

From Monday to Friday, there will be periodic delays up to 20 minutes outside of peak travel times.

Crews will not be stopping traffic on Friday afternoons, weekends and the days before or after long weekends.

A construction zone speed limit of 60 km/h is in place for the duration of the project. The Malahat summit rest area will be closed throughout construction.

The ministry thanks the public in advance for their patience as these safety measures are put in place.

Motorists are reminded to obey flaggers and speed limits and watch for workers and updates on the highway message boards.
