Upgrades to a key intersection on Highway 19A will improve safety and mobility for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, local residents and visitors.
The upgrades include a new traffic signal with three crosswalks and pedestrian countdown signals at the Drew Road and Johnstone Road intersection, between Qualicum and Parksville. Other upgrades include improved street lighting, line painting and drainage work.
The community was the driving force in bringing this project forward. As a result, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure conducted traffic counts and determined that a signalized intersection would improve safety.
The ministry contributed about $280,000 toward the project and ICBC contributed about $20,000 through its Road Improvement Program.
Since 2001, the Government of B.C. has invested over $42 million in transportation infrastructure improvements in the Qualicum/Parksville area.
