A new traffic signal and two pedestrian crosswalks will be installed at the intersection of Comox Rd. and Queneesh Rd. by mid-December, announced Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone today.

The new signal will help drivers safely exit Queneesh Rd. onto Comox Rd., and the crosswalks will provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The new crosswalks will have countdown timers and improved lighting. The signal will be vehicle activated at Queenesh Rd. or pedestrian and cyclist activated at the crosswalks.

Raylec Power LP of Cumberland began construction in mid-November. When the project is finished, the existing crosswalk east of Queneesh Rd. will be removed.

Total project cost is estimated at $150,000, with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia contributing $5,700.

Quotes:

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone -

“The ministry understands the importance of this new signal and crosswalk to the K'ómoks First Nation, which will provide safer travel for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers through the community and better access to the new K'ómoks First Nation Administration Office.”

Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation and MLA for Comox Valley Don McRae -

“We all know how busy Comox Road gets and the frustration that can set in when trying to cross it or merge onto it. There’s no doubt the new crosswalks and traffic signal will be a big boost to all those who use the Queneesh Road intersection.”

K'ómoks First Nation Council -

“Our Nation is very excited to see the positive changes happening on I.R. #1 (K'ómoks Indian Reserve #1). With a new traffic signal, we are one step closer to achieving our safety goals.”

ICBC director of road safety John Dickinson -

“We were pleased to work together on improvements to Comox Road to help make roads safer for everyone, including pedestrians and cyclists. Fewer crashes and injuries will also lower claims costs and help keep rates as low as possible.”
