Tybo Contracting Ltd. has won this year’s Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award for bridges and structures, for the Cariboo Overpass and Gaglardi Way Mobile Weigh Scale Project in Burnaby.
Tybo Contracting Ltd. was awarded an $8.4 million contract for this project. Challenges that added to its complexity included: working in a constrained environment; high traffic volumes; detouring Highway 1 traffic to adjacent corridors, and erecting bridge girders over Highway 1 that required full closures over several nights.
As well, Tybo Contracting Ltd. needed to address working around a 150mm jet fuel pipeline, and maintaining access for transit, pedestrians and cyclists through the construction site.
The Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Awards recognize construction and maintenance companies demonstrating excellence in the categories of grading, paving, bridges and structures, and highway maintenance work throughout the province. There is also an award for excellence in safety innovation.
The 12th annual awards were hosted by the B.C. Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association on Friday, Dec. 5 in Victoria.
The other finalists in this category were Copcan Contracting Ltd for Highway 3 Little Sand Creek Bridge Replacement and Neel-Co Builders Ltd. for Nimpkish River Bridge Deck Rehabilitation.
