Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson has issued the following statement on board expenses at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU):
"Following a review of board expenses at KPU between 2011 and 2013, it has been brought to my attention that a number of claims were not appropriate or reasonable. Boards of public post-secondary institutions are required to invest their funds in education and research.
"Government expectations are clearly outlined in the Taxpayer Accountability Principles that were introduced in June 2014. These taxpayer principles strengthen accountability and ensure provincial public-sector organizations operate in the best interest of taxpayers.
"As the Minister of Advanced Education, I find it unacceptable for the board of a post-secondary institution to incur excessive costs for entertainment, especially when they involve meetings that are only between board members.
"KPU has requested the repayment of certain expenses for entertainment in addition to the costs to attend two political fundraising events. The former board member who claimed the expenses in question has agreed to pay them back.
"Kwantlen now has formal policies in place to ensure all expenses are authorized, reasonable and appropriately documented. Policies include pre-approval for any alcohol and limits on meal claims. KPU also has introduced a policy that prohibits expense claims for political events, whether federal, provincial or municipal. The policy also disallows any payments to lobbyists."
