GIBSON - The official opening of Gibsons Elementary school today applauded a community already engaged in lifelong learning. Staff and students from the Sunshine Coast school district celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The $14.4-million project features 300 seats for grades 1-7 students, two full-day kindergarten classes, a StrongStart centre, a Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC) and is built to LEED Gold standard.
The two storey design includes a “Main Street” which runs through the school from the main entrance foyer, forming the social heart of the building. Grouped in their own wing, classrooms can be secured from the rest of the school, allowing the gym, multi-purpose rooms and NLC spaces to be utilized after hours.
Design elements include breakout alcoves for collaborative discussion and large interior windows. These informal learning spaces enable the application of 21st century learning.
