Using her authority under B.C.’s Environmental Management Act, Environment
Minister Mary Polak has ordered the remediation of a high-risk orphan site in Langley to protect human health and the environment.
The site (20668 72nd Ave.) was home to an illegal drug lab which was dismantled by the RCMP and the Ministry of Environment in April 2014.
Ministry staff determined the property a high-risk contaminated site and identified three
neighbouring properties which could potentially have contamination.
Despite repeated attempts by the ministry, the owner and tenant responsible for the drug lab
failed to complete the required remediation and are in non-compliance with the Environmental
Management Act. Under this legislation, the owner and tenant will be held responsible for any
costs related to cleanup or remediation at the site as well as on any neighbouring properties.
The ministry is currently in the process of securing a contractor for the cleanup and
remediation with work slated to begin later this month.
