Individuals wishing to provide feedback on an intentions paper proposing how land might be protected in the South Okanagan now have until Oct. 31, 2015, to offer input.
The extension allows more time to prepare more comprehensive submissions.
The Province launched a public consultation last month on how land might be protected in the South Okanagan, as a result of discussions with First Nations and stakeholders. An intentions paper, along with conceptual maps of the areas included in the proposed policies, is available for review and comment that will help the provincial government finalize designation recommendations for this area.
The Province is proposing a land protection framework based on five key principles, which are:
- Additional protection will be beneficial;
- Management is shared with First Nations;
- Existing users are recognized;
- Respect for private land holders; and
- Tourism is actively promoted.
Several factors will be considered when developing the final policy, including the protection of First Nations values, expansion of tourism and recreational activities.
Once public comment closes, BC Parks will review feedback and publicly post a consultation report, along with final recommendations, expected in early 2016.
