Minister of Finance Michael de Jong, QC, issued the following statement on the death of Mr. Peter Dueck:
“Abbotsford has lost a leader whose passion for public service was guided by the highest standard of integrity and ethical conduct.
“He contributed so much to Abbotsford and the-then District of Matsqui, helping launch a successful automobile dealership more than 60 years ago that endures today. But his significant contributions were to public service, both in the civic arena on Matsqui council and provincially as one of our MLAs and, most notably, as the provincial Minister of Health.
“Peter stepped down from provincial politics just over 21 years ago. In the ensuing by-election, he opened the door for me to enter provincial politics. We remained good friends, and he acted as a valuable mentor, particularly when I followed in his footsteps to also become the Minister of Health.
“Peter Dueck will always be remembered as an individual who set the standard for ethical conduct, both in life and in office.
“On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, and for the countless families whose lives he touched, I want to express deep condolences and offer thanks to Peter and Helen Dueck’s family for all that Peter gave to our community throughout his long and fruitful life.”
