VICTORIA - The District of Kent will continue operations of Kilby Historic Site and neighbouring campground with a new heritage site management agreement beginning April 1, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson announced today.
Under the one-year agreement, the district will manage the heritage-designated buildings as well as the campground and RV park. A longer-term agreement may be considered.
While the agreement is with the District of Kent, the district is sub-contracting the operation of Kilby to a local non-profit, the Fraser Heritage Society.
Purchased by the Province in 1972 and 1973, Kilby Historic site, named after the original general store owners, Thomas and Eliza Kilby, is the remainder of what was once the community of Harrison Mills. The site on scenic Harrison Bay includes a farm and a general store museum dating back to 1906. There is also a heritage post office and above the store, the Manchester House Hotel, both of which were a central gathering place in the community when Harrison Mills was at its busiest.
The District of Kent and Fraser Heritage Society will continue to operate the neighbouring campground, picnic area, nature trails and boat launch.
