The Inklin River wildfire, located about 90 kilometres southeast of Atlin, is now estimated to have burned 250 hectares. This lightning-caused fire is within the boundaries of the Nakina-Inklin Rivers/Yáwu Yaa Conservancy in a remote area that is accessible only by air.
No structures are threatened at this time. Wildfire Management Branch personnel are monitoring the fire daily and working with land managers to determine an appropriate wildfire suppression strategy for this wildfire.
Wildfire is a natural, beneficial process in many ecosystems. It is a key factor in the maintenance of a healthy forest and contributes to overall biodiversity. Through evolution and exposure to wildfire, many plants and animals have adapted to fire and depend on it to reproduce.
Within the Nakina-Inklin Rivers/Yáwu Yaa Conservancy, wildfire has traditionally rejuvenated the shrub and herb layer, enhancing habitat for an array of species. The reduction in fuel loads caused by naturally occurring wildfires can also reduce the intensity of future fires.
