Crews from the Wildfire Management Branch are responding to a new wildfire in the northwest corner of the province. It currently covers about 12 hectares near Kakiddi Creek, 25 kilometres west of Iskut.
Twenty-three firefighters and one helicopter are aggressively working on this fire. Cooler and wetter conditions in the forecast are expected to assist fire suppression efforts.
There has been no significant growth on the other four active fires in the Northwest Fire Centre and no structures are threatened at this time:
- The King Salmon River Basin fire has burned 221 hectares within the Taku River/T’akú Téix’ Conservancy, 90 kilometres southeast of Atlin.
- The Langhorse Mountain fire has burned 2,000 hectares in the headwaters of the Nakina River, approximately 70 kilometres southeast of Atlin.
- The Inklin River fire has burned an estimated 512 hectares about 90 kilometres southeast of Atlin.
- The Red River fire, about 30 kilometres northeast of Boya Lake Provincial Park, has burned 285 hectares within the Ne’āh Conservancy.
The Wildfire Management Branch also advises that smoke may be visible in communities throughout the northwest corner of the province, due to wildfires currently burning in Yukon.
